about

Putting together the electronic raga has been a dream of mine ever since I started to build a modular synthesizer. I was exposed to east indian classical music at a young age, having been brought to many raga concerts put on by a friend who brought artists from India to Saskatoon for performances at the University of Saskatchewan.

The first part is based on Raga Kalyani (sanskrit translation: beautiful, lovely, auspicious) . The song opens with the noise of an EMF sensor, which morphs into harmonics from a spectral resonator. This is to set the stage for the first raga, similar to what a Tanpura is used for in traditional indian ragas.

I'm using a modular synthesizer to create a lot of the layers beneath the melodies. I use a Haken Audio Continuum Mini, which is an MPE device that allows the performer to explore microtones (shrutis). Did you know there are 22 shrutis in an octave?

The second part goes into a darker mood, called Raga Bhairav. This raga exudes seriousness and and introversion.

The set ends with a simple major pentatonic variation, to end on a peaceful mood, and I let the modular run a generative patch while Kris and I talked about the music and some of my other endeavors.

Special thanks to my musical mentor Sunil Choubal for inspiring this work, and exposing me to so many amazing indian artists.

Here's a rundown of the equipment used to make this:

Modular Synth
Haken Continuum Mini
Ableton Push 2
Dave Smith Prophet Rev 2
Pine Tree Design Lab RH-03 EMF sensor
Monome arc
various indian instrument VSTs
